Par cans are ubiquitous in stage and theatre lighting, found in amost every lighting rig in the world. Althought they've traditionally been used in theatre lighting, they can also be found in music gigs, retail environments, conferences and many other types of venue.So what's the reason for their popularity? I imagine it's something to do with their versatile nature. Available in a range of sizes, with a choice of fittings they can near enough fit into most applications.The actual beam of a par lamp can either be spot (profile), flood or standard, making it a highly flexible lantern. Also, like most other types of lantern, you can modify the colours with the use of colour frames and coloured gel filters.
So with such a wide range of par cans available, how do you go about choosing one? Each par can has it's own numerical reference, for instance you can get a PAR16 or PAR64 can. The number is an indication of size. The number is a direct reference to the diameter of the par can lamp in 1/8th of an inch.
Ok so we understand the sizing of the Par lamp but what is most suitable for what application? Well for instance, to provide highlights in small indoor areas,such as a retail or bar space, it's most common to use PAR16- PAR30 cans. These should be sufficient to supply you with enough light. If you are going to be lighting a large area such as big theatre stage, or a large rock concert, you would most commonly choose PAR56 -PAR64 size lamps. With regards to the number of Par cans you use, this very much depends on the type of effect and how much cover you want to provide. It's sometimes a good ides to use a larger number of smaller Par cans as opposed to a fewer number of larger ones, as this can create an overpowering flood-like effect onstage, as well as generating lots of heat.
In recent years the introduction of LED technology has revolutionised the lighting industry. Now par cans can be produced at lower cost, giving out less heat and drastically reducing the need for maintenance.
Please be aware that the fittings can get extremely hot. LED par cans are becoming more popular because of their low power consumption and reduced heat emittance. Many schools, and youth theatre groups are turning to the LED technology also becuase it's safer to use around younger peopls.
